I don’t watch the X Factor, but rumour has it that in tonight’s final the contestants will be attempting to ruin one of the best songs ever written. Following that the winner will then release their mangled version of it as a single.
So just in case over the next few weeks anyone forgets, here’s a reminder of how it should be done:
Yup they did. I met someone last week who’s a major Leonard Cohen fan who hates ‘Hallelujah’ and thinks it’s just a crowd pleaser. But anyways it’s really easy to go for overkill on the song, and I’m afraid Ms Burke (who actually has an amazing soul voice) did, big style. Probably not her fault, with THAT arrangement, but I’d love her to sing something her voice deserves, not power ballads.
I prefer the Leonard Cohen original, or Rufus Wainwright’s version, which are both fairly low key. But apparently Cohen is broke, so he’s happy with his song being ruined. I thought he was meant to be a buddhist monk?
I have to disagree. The best version of the song is by John Cale.
