Oh dear I was facetious I’m afraid. Anyone got a fast car?
Give me one reason Polly…After all, isn’t today a new beginning?
Unfortunately I was born sceptical. And the cultural imperalism and look at me-ism (inter alia) of his speech got right up my nose.
I’m resentful of the US’s position as international bully boy. And the disproportionate influence we in the UK give to them as a nation. And I don’t really know what difference a token black man is going to make anyway – did Thatcher do anything for women?
But finally, can I recommend this post by Parallel. Which sums up my main objection pretty neatly. Where are the women in this picture?

Oh – and *smites forehead *why are privileged people more important than non privileged people anyways? Why are we – and our news outlets – so much more concerned about Obama than an African woman or man currently dying of starvation?
Our priorities are wrong. We’re just concerned about who has status.
Oh and he said he’d bomb Pakistan…. plus ca change.
Polly, I don’t disagree with much of what you say here, but I do think it’s a good sign that the American people have signalled loud and clear that they’ve had enough of Bush et al and their colonial warmongering b/s. Plus I’m delighted that all the anti-abortion proposals were rejected (although hugely disappointed with the proposition 8 result in California). While he’s not perfect by any means, Obama’s win is still a far far better result than McCain winning – he’d have been an absolute disaster not just for America but for the rest of the world too.
Btw, I was just playing around with Tracy Chapman song titles in my earlier response to you….
