hi Cath,
sorry to hear you’ve been so troubled by the fibroids but glad it’s nothing more serious. I’ve had similar at the same time as endometriosis and know how debilitating it can all be but have to say was glad in the end not to opt for a hysterectomy – mind i was in my early 30′s at the time and might feel different if I was affected now almost 20years later. I have the opinion that if it ain’t broke (which it isn’t necessarily) don’t remove it!

The full bladder moves the contents of the lower abdomen (inc. Freddie the Bastard) up a bit to facilitate the scan.

[Now you've got ME doing it though - I was going to type 'nothing TOO serious', so you didn't think I was belittling the problem of fibroids, and then I thought, no, I don't want to worry her by implying that fibroids are quite a bit serious! That whole thing about drinking such and such amount of water a day is advertising bullshit.
You should drink when you feel thirsty and it doesn’t matter if it isn’t water.
Science says so. Fact!

Yep, you shoulda got the piccy. Mind you, it would have looked liked a stripy grey blobby thing going on.

Years ago, I considered the same but for different reasons (my life was hell). In many ways I am glad that I didn’t. I guess I am saying to consider it as a last resort.

Well it’s major surgery but you’re guaranteed the problem won’t recur. There are other treatments which are less invasive, but they’re less effective. And probably harder to get on the NHS I suspect.

To be honest Polly, the idea’s growing on me. I’ve spoken to several women since I wrote my original “Arghh, I don’t want a hysterectomy” piece, all of whom said it was the best decision they ever made.

My problem is I’ve had several surgeries in the last 10 or so years, and none of them went particularly well. So I’m kind of reluctant to go under the knife if there’s an alternative.

Having said that, if the only alternative is as my GP suggested, just dealing with it until my menopause (potentially another 10+ years) then I’ll take the surgery.
